March Astromusings -Solar Total Eclipse, Happy International Women’s Day

Solar_Eclipse-8 Mar 2016 300x224On 8/9 March we have a Solar Total Eclipse (New Moon Eclipse). This coincides with International Women’s Day. The Eclipse occurs on Wednesday 9 March at 12.54:25 pm AEDT Sydney time at 18 degrees 55 Pisces sextiling Pluto and opposed by Jupiter in Virgo with Saturn in Sagittarius added to the equation forming a T square in mutable signs. A Solar Eclipse occurs when the Moon moves between the Earth and Sun, obscuring Earth’s view of the Sun. With the Eclipse being in the sign of Pisces and also Neptune, the ruler of Pisces, and Mercury, the planet of communication, all in Pisces, it is a time to attune to your creative, spiritual and psychic potential.  Gloria Steinem QuoteIt is a time to dream, live out your fantasies and float on cloud nine! With powerful Pluto in the mix there is a strong transformative energy accompanying this New Moon Eclipse. People who have Sun, Moon or any other personal planets at about 18 degrees of the mutable signs of Pisces, Gemini. Virgo or Sagittarius are the ones who are most likely to feel its impact.

With the New Moon Eclipse in Pisces coinciding with International Women’s Day this is a time for women to realise their dreams. It is a time to visualise their goals to help manifest them. To visualise receiving equal pay for equal work, to campaign for our sisters across the globe – for girls’ education, for women who suffer from honour killings, for those who suffer rape in war and conflict zones, and who are victims of child labour and female genital mutilation. As women and girls we need to have enough self love and self esteem to dare to ask for a rise in salary or our partners to share the household chores and parental responsibilty. We still have a a way to go before we achieve equality in all areas of our life.

Betty Friedan The Feminine MystiqueBetty Friedan's Quote

Betty Friedan – Author of The Feminine Mystique
Betty Friedan (February 4, 1921 – February 4, 2006) was an American writer, activist, and feminist. A leading figure in the women’s movement in the United States, her 1963 book The Feminine Mystique is often credited with sparking the second wave of American feminism in the 20th century. Germaine GreerGermaine Greer publicity

Germaine Greer – Author of the Female Eunuch

In 1970, Australian-born author and academic, Germaine Greer, fired up the collective imagination of women when she wrote The Female Eunuch, a book that challenged the status quo, questioning a woman’s traditional role in society, and provided an important framework for the feminist movement of the 1970s. I remember what an impact her book, The Female Eunuch had on me as a young woman and still vividly recall queuing with my female friends at Sydney Town Hall to hear Germaine Greer speak on her ground breaking book, The Female Eunuch.

The Female Eunuch called on women to reject their traditional roles in the home, and explore ways to break out of the mould that society had imposed on them. It also encouraged women to question the power of traditional authority figures – such as doctors, psychiatrists, priests and the police – who at the time were not used to being questioned, and to explore their own sexuality.

Germaine Greer's natal chart

Germaine has the Sun in forward looking Aquarius with feisty Mars in Scorpio in the 10th house of career making her a formidable warrior for the cause of female liberation and would explain her often abrasive manner. She doesn’t suffer fools gladly.

These were heady times in the late 60s and 70s when these feminist icons challenged the status quo and women began to realise they didn’t have to be confined by their gender, that they could realise their dreams. We have a way to go yet but the more liberated women are the more equal our society will be and we will all both as men and women benefit from these changes.
